for a ‘friendly’ Over-35s match against Lenzie, organised by Tim Moore. Some were current 1st and 2nd XV players – for others game-time was a distant, but fond, memory …… . For one of the Lenzie boys this was his first game!
After the necessarily extended warm-up, the match kicked off and Lenzie rapidly took control and retained possession. From the off it was clear this was going to be a closely-fought, competitive match with some meaty rumbles and robust tackling (some a little high for the ref’s liking!).
15’ in Lenzie set up a drive from an attacking lineout, before spinning the ball wide and crossing for the game’s opening try. The conversion attempt was sliced wide however. Endrick then gained more possession and worked their way up field. Several drives for the line were halted before ‘Shammy’ Ogilvie crashed over and Sam Greenock converted. This pattern was repeated, with Chris ‘Tooney’ Jewell finishing (from at least 2 metres out!); Sam again adding the extra points. Lenzie were not to be out-done, however and, right on half-time, slick hands released their speed-merchant (relatively-speaking!) to run in from 40m.
Half-time score: Strathendrick 14 – Lenzie 12. A close game.
Right from the kick-off, Lenzie drove upfield and their powerful Centre skipped through the home defence to give the visitors the lead. But with unopposed scrums now implemented, both teams had some possession and with it opportunities to play champagne (well ‘Prosecco’) rugby. The Endrick old-boys swept up field and a fine passing move was finished in style by guest, Neil Rimmer. Endrick backs and back row now came to the fore with Rimmer, Ed Roche, Sammy, Shammy, JC, Dawsie, Kyle Campbell and others all making good ground before releasing Liam Ellington for a run-in. Back came Lenzie and scored another try out wide to bring the score to 28 – 24! Everything to play for.
Right at the close another great team move from ‘Endrick was finished by Sam Greenock who also converted to complete his 100% kick success rate.
Final score Strathendrick 35 – Lenzie 24.
A really entertaining, competitive game was followed by beers, cheers, pies and a sociable evening enjoyed by all. [There would definitely be some sore / stiff bodies on Saturday morning though!]
