JORDANHILL PHOENIX 3, STRATHENDRICK 50. Scottish Hydro Bowl - round 2

Endrick's players were delighted to find ideal conditions at Nethercraigs on Saturday for their re-scheduled cuptie against Jordanhill Phoenix.

After innumerable cancellations or games played on dodgy surfaces, Endrick's players were delighted to find ideal conditions at Nethercraigs on Saturday for their re-scheduled cup tie against Jordanhill Phoenix. This was the first ever meeting between the sides so that the ability of the colourful Glasgow side was an unknown factor to Endrick. There was certainly plenty of beef and muscle in the pack and as the game developed it was clear that their back division had players who were not short of skill. What they did not have was the pace that Endrick had all round the pitch and that made all the difference.

It took Endrick just four minutes to go in front. The forwards won the ball on halfway, Bruce Duncan carried on for a couple of steps before transferring to Scott McCabe and he raced through the Phoenix ranks with scarcely a finger laid on him. Bruce Duncan added the conversion. The Fintry men might have added to that lead but a couple of wayward passes and dropped balls put an end to promising moves.

Phoenix took advantage of these escapes to show a bit of attacking rugby and in 17 minutes they put their first points on the board when Endrick were caught offside in front of their 22. That was as close as Jordanhill got to the line. The game was played mainly in their half of the pitch but as long as the game was kept at close quarters Endrick struggled to break down a stuffy defence.

With half an hour gone Endrick scored their second try. A Phoenix kick went into touch on halfway and Dave McGuffie took a quick throw to Stuart Forsyth who in turn fed Scott McCabe. On went the after-burners and again his pace took him past the opposition. Bruce Duncan added the extra points and the score started to look more realistic. Two minutes before the break Endrick dropped the ball when another score looked likely but referee Paul Sleeman called play back 35 metres and awarded a penalty for a high tackle. Neil McQuarrie landed the kick to give Endrick a 17-3 lead to take into the second half.

Ten minutes after the resumption speed of thought gave Endrick a third try. A line-out ball was played down to Henry Douglas 28 metres out and when the Phoenix men moved to cover attackers the scrum half spotted a huge gap and sprinted through to score at the posts. Neil McQuarrie kicked the conversion.

After that Endrick seemed to think that they had done enough and the game went flat for a time. It sparked back into life again in 24 minutes when James Cuthbertson won the ball well inside his own 22 and charged to the other end. He did not quite reach the line and Phoenix scrambled the ball away to touch but Endrick were again in a good attacking position. The line-out ball was shuffled about, eventually reaching Dougie Porteous but he was held up over the line. From the 5-metre scrum James Cuthbertson picked up and forced his way over. Neil McQuarrie added the conversion points.

Endrick were now flying. The forwards were rampant and everyone of the backs seemed anxious to show his pace. In 31 minutes the pack drove Phoenix back, Kyle Campbell seized the loose ball and sprinted in for the fifth try. Three minutes later Campbell was again in action, off-loading to Henry Douglas who once more ran away from the opposition in his race to the line. Neil McQuarrie converted both tries but recorded his only miss of the afternoon when he failed to convert the final try in 37 minutes when Henry Douglas completed his hat-trick. Perhaps Neil felt that fifty was a nice round number on which to finish.
