In spite of a cold wind a fair number of supporters turned out to enjoy Strathendrick's annual end of season Captain v President match. The Captain's side in blue and white was on the usual lines while the President's team in red comprised a number of players who had formerly played for the club, some who are still playing plus the usual couple of guests to stiffen the mix. Their captain for the day was Dougie Porteous.
The President's side quickly set out to show that they intended to make a game of it and in only eight minutes they took the lead when Callum Ferguson raced through to score. The same player also opened the scoring in the corresponding match last year. Neil McQuarrie added the conversion to put his side 7-0 ahead.
The Reds continued to compete strongly and the game was an even contest between two well-matched sides. After 27 minutes the Blues drew level when the President's side found how difficult it is to stop Ewan MacKay when he is in full flight. His try was converted by Sam Greenock.
If the Blues thought that they were now on a roll, that idea was quickly put on hold. Six minutes later Gillon Rand, sharp as ever, spotted an opening out wide and Charlie Thomson hared down the touchline to score the President's second try.
The lead changed hands again only three minutes later when Kyle Campbell broke through and off-loaded to Sam Greenock who touched down and then kicked the extras. With only four minutes to play before the break, that looked like a good time for the Captain's side to go ahead for the first time. However they were not satisfied with a two point lead and a typical charge by ‘Shammy’ James Ogilvy saw him reach the posts leaving Sam Greenock with an easy kick to take the score at the end of a thoroughly entertaining first half to 21 - 12.
After a breather at half-time the President's side was refreshed for the second half but after ten minutes fell further behind when Kyle Campbell broke away to score a fourth try for the Captain. He still had enough puff to convert his own try.
Midway through the half Ewan MacKay seemed to be on course for his second try but when he was half stopped he handed over to Shammy to finish the job. Sam Greenock again kicked the conversion.
The final quarter was fairly even until the Reds put in a late effort to improve their position. With two minutes left for play, they lost possession to Dougie Duff inside the Blues 22 and DD ran almost the length of the pitch to add a sixth try, adding the extras himself to give the Captain a 42-12 win.
